We love homemade tree decorations – and these salt dough fingerprint trees are super cute and a lovely keepsake for years to come!
Our super simple ARTventurers salt dough recipe is below plus step by step instructions on how to make these at home with your own little ARTventurers!
First you need to make a batch of green salt dough. It’s super easy to make :
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1/2 cup water
A squirt of green ready mix paint
Place the flour and salt in a bowl and stir well. Then add the water and paint and stir then knead well.
To make the tree decoration you’ll need :
A tree shape cookie cutter
Some coloured paint – we used acrylic here but brightly coloured ready mix paint will work ok too
Something to create a hole at the top of the decoration – we used the end of a small paintbrush but a pencil or similar would do!
Some baking parchment
A permanent marker (black)
Flatten out the salt dough on the baking parchment and use the cookie cutter to create a tree shape
Using your finger – press fingertip into paint and then make a few different coloured fingerprints in the salt dough shape for the tree lights
Now you need to dry out the salt dough. You could :
1. Bake in an oven at a low heat until hard – at around 100 degrees C for around 2 hours until firm
2. Dry using the microwave. Use a low heat setting and do it in short bursts of around 10 seconds and keep checking until it is firm and dry
3. Air dry for a few days
Once your decoration is dry and cool, use black marker to add the “strings” for the lights
Add ribbon or cord for hanging and hang on your tree!
(If you want to keep the decoration for years to come we strongly recommend you give it a coat or two of clear varnish)
