How to throw an awesome lockdown Kids’ birthday party

So lockdown is here and we don’t know how long social distancing measures will be in place or when this covid-hell will end, but it won’t stop us from celebrating birthdays!
Here’s a few tips on how you can still make your Kids’ lockdown birthday the bestest ever!

1. Get crafting those decorations

Jazz up your house and make it party central… I’m talking home made bunting, homemade party banners, party hats, streamers, party poppers, shakers, anything that makes a loud noise, shredded paper to use as confetti…
Make it colourful and make it special. Make a pinterest board filled with ideas.

2. Birthday video messages

Get your little ones friends and family to record special birthday messages and ask them to message them to you via FB or WhatsApp, then edit them together on a video editing app, like Youcut, with some funky birthday music in the background! Then play it to your little one. If you can cast it onto your telly, even better! Kids love it when messages are on the big screen.

3. Make a cardboard box birthday cake

We’re all getting stacks of Amazon orders right? So let’s use those cardboard boxes and turn them into a cardboard birthday cake to decorate! Stack 3 boxes on top of one another, biggest at the bottom, smallest at the top and tape together. Then get paints out, get collage materials out, tissue paper, felt, sequins, stickers. Mix glitter into the paint. Use toilet roll tubes as candles and place them on the top. Instead of blowing out the candles, see if your little one can knock them off with plastic ball pool balls!

4. Lockdown birthday selfies

Why not print out our fab lockdown selfie signs, print them off on card (or on paper and then laminate them if you have a laminator) and take some super fun photos with them! If anything it’ll make you smile when you throwback to them again next year! You can download our signs by clicking below:

5. Do some party games at home

play pass the parcel by getting your little one to set out all their toys in a circle and pass the parcel round the toys. Or get Koo Koo Kanga Roo up on YouTube and dance along to their daft songs (I highly recommend at Party or Dinosaur Stomp). Why not hide little birthday present round the house and send your little one on a present scavenger hunt by making up clues on where the presents are hidden? Then there’s the classic Hokey Cokey, or depending on how many of you there are you could do a game of musical statues! Bust out those crazy moves.

6. Birthday mocktails

Make up some special party drinks for your little ones, use whatever random things you have in the cupboard, see what creations your little ones come up with. If they want to blend up brocolli, grapes and lemonade, let them try! They may accidentally create a new trendy smoothie!

7. Order a Bear Building Birthday kit from us!

In normal times, we offer bear building parties for your little ones and their friends. What we’re temporarily doing instead is offering bear building kits for your little ones to do at home with your supervision. Kits include the cuddly bear/animal skin, a canvas bag to decorate, colouring sheets, stuffing, and an adoption certificate for their new furry friend. To see what we can offer you just drop us a message 🙂

8. But nothing beats seeing your friends and family on your birthday

….and that can still happen, live, just via FB messenger video calling, Zoom or whatsapp group call. This is especially good for older children, who want to be able to see all their friends at once. Get them to collectively sing happy birthday to your gorgeous birthday child.

Ultimately, just have the bestest day with your little one. Play games, eat picky party food, have an indoor picnic, dance like a lunatic, throw around shredder paper and just keep on smiling.

As long as you stay safe and stay healthy, that’s all that matters 🙂

Summer holiday activities!

The school holidays are nearly upon us, and these 6 weeks can feel like they’re going to last an eternity! It’s even trickier when you don’t know what the weather is going to be like! But fear not, ARTventurers have come to the rescue with our handy guide to lots of fabulous places to explore this summer throughout the North East! There are so many summer holiday activities to try.

For this blog I’m going to highlight a few fabulous places near the coast in North Tyneside. These are child-friendly places you can visit with your little ones.

On a sunny day I love going for a walk along the sea front in Tynemouth or Whitley Bay. I was born near the sea in Bournemouth so I’ve always been drawn to beaches and watching the waves crash and tumble. It’s so relaxing! And even better, a walk along the sea front or on the beach is completely free. You could even make a day of it by bringing a picnic along. Maybe grab a beach ball to keep the littlies entertained too.

Littley Bay

Littley Bay is a coastal themed role play children’s cafe. It celebrates all things to do with Whitley Bay. There’s a mini Jam Jar cinema, a mini Di Meo’s Ice Cream Parlour and a very cute mini version of St. Mary’s lighthouse. It’s a new and brilliant place for children to unleash their imaginations. It’s definitely worth a visit! There is also a cafe too for you to grab some food after all the role play fun! Admission is £2 for under one’s and £5 for one and over.

Northumberland Park

Northumberland Park is a gorgeous and tranquil green space, nestled between Tynemouth and North Shields. In this beautiful park there is a variety of fun things to explore. There’s a multi-age play area, sculpture trail and lake to walk around. Also a butterfly meadow and woodland walks for your little explorers. There’s a fab tea room if you fancy a slice of yummy cake and a cuppa. Admission is free to the park so it’s great if you’re wanting somewhere to go on for free!

Blue Reef Aquarium

The Blue Reef Aquarium in Tynemouth is a fab place to visit if your little one loves underwater creatures! You can view lots of different species of fish from around the world! From rays and coral reef fish, to seals there are plenty of amazing marine creatures to spot. They also have some cheeky little monkeys who live at the aquarium too! Daily shows and feeds are available to watch, which gives you the opportunity to get closer to these awesome creatures. Blue Reef Aquarium often have special offers on tickets, so check out their website or their facebook page for up to date offers and ticket prices.

The Keel Row

If you fancy going somewhere lovely for your tea after an adventure at the beach, The Keel Row in Seaton Delaval is a family friendly pub with delicious home made food. It’s one of my favourite places to go, and the food portions are enormous! There is both an outdoor AND indoor children’s play area, making it a great place to go to for some food and fun. They often have family fun days where there are lots of fab activities. Bouncy castles, face painting, slime making…they have so many FREE activities available, so if you’re ever looking for some family fun, check them out.

Taking a chance…

So this week I’ve been incredibly busy doing my first ever events as ARTventurers North Tyneside!
I’ve been taking part in Little Movers Easter Eggstravaganza at The Lakeside Centre in Killingworth and Marden Bridge Sports Centre in Whitley Bay. I’ve absolutely adored showcasing how colourful, creative and arty the children can get as part of an ARTventurers session. It was brilliant to do taster sessions with so many babies and toddlers. I loved seeing them get really creative and stuck in with making art.

Whilst I was doing the Easter events, I had a massive smile on my face. I loved every single second of it. It made me want to share exactly why I decided to become part of ARTventurers, and why I love art so much.

So quick bit about my background; I studied Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University. During my time there I dressed up as a bird and sang for worms, and sat in a hairdressers’ window with a Marie Antionette wig on, eating cake (fun times!). I’ve worked at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Arts in Gateshead as a Gallery Assistant. Also, I’ve run arts and crafts after school clubs in schools.

Why I love ART

Art has always been a big part of my life. When I was little, I was continuously drawing pictures. Pictures of me in the garden, pictures of me teaching bird puppets to speak French (like you do!)… I just used to want to create art or draw all the time. As I got older, I used art as a form of self-expression, and then as a way of escapism. Whenever I felt things getting too much, I’d immerse myself in something arty and creative, whether that be collaging or making textile art, or simply just getting a colouring book and colouring for an hour.

Art really helped me after my little boy was born. I had a rough pregnancy and an extremely traumatic birth. It took me a long time to even begin to feel normal again, but to help calm my mind down I’d often sit for half an hour, just quietly colouring in and escaping from everything that made me feel scared about being a new mum.

Taking a chance

But that aside, having Jenson made me feel passionate about art again. It made me re-evaluate exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted something that would allow me to be flexible, that would let me be the type of mum I wanted to be to Jenson. I wanted something that meant I could work with children, but do something that I’m really passionate about. When the opportunity to buy the North Tyneside ARTventurers franchise came up, I was so unsure. I’d never owned a business before. I didn’t think I could do it. But I thought, why not take a risk? I’d always dreamt of running an art business, and suddenly this opportunity appeared. So, I did it. And it’s hands down the best decision I ever made.

Why I LOVE ARTventurers

ARTventurers is not only an amazing provider of baby classes and toddler classes, it’s an incredibly supportive network of fabulous people. Yes, we are all self-employed, but we are all there for each other. All sharing fantastic art ideas for the classes we provide to you, and all willing to work together to make sure we deliver the best classes we can.

So going back to why I love art, it’s such a fantastic way to escape. In our classes, you can let your little ones imagination run wild, and let them escape amongst our art activities for an hour. It’s great for stimulation, self-expression, confidence and communication. Most of all, it’s so much fun, and a great excuse for them to get messy (without you having to clean up afterwards!). We do so many different activities. From free painting to crafty things. From colourful process art to sensory, messy play. We have art activities that are suitable for a range of different ages.

If you’d like to book a class, or see what’s on offer, click HERE. Or if you have any questions, feel free to drop me a message at

I’d absolutely love to see you in class soon.
